An American Suffragist Suite -Level 4-5
An American Suffragist Suite -Level 4-5
An American Suffragist Suite was commissioned by The Seneca Falls Community Band, Seneca Falls, N.Y. for their 25th anniversary. Seneca Falls, N.Y. is the home of The Women’s Rights National Historic Park. An American Suffragist Suite is level 5 medley of music sung and used in the First Women’s Rights Movement (1843 - 1925). The Suffrage Movement came about as wives were frustrated with the high rate of husband's alcohol abuse and the resultant physical abuse. The movement began as a way to address these issues.
In researching melodies for the An American Suffragist Suite it was quickly discovered that no original melodies were used. Suffrage scores frequently adopted familiar melodies from patriotic and hymnal tunes, as well as folk tunes of the day. This suite incorporates four songs that are not familiar today; Where Are Your Boys Today, Let Us All Speak Our Minds, The Promised Land, & We Have Heard The Voice Of Freedom (Song of Wyoming). At the end The Battle Hymn of the Republic as the Battle Hymn was a favorite rally song.
