Bumps In The Night is a piece inspired by my twin grandsons, Mason & Jack. We play a game they call “Monsters” a version of “Hide & Seek”, the object being to try to scare the seekers! It is a single movement piece that has two sections. The first being “Monsters: In the Closet & Under the Bed!”, and the second “Fairies & Dragons: At Play, Dancing, In Revelry!”. Both sections have opening themes that are then developed throughout. “Monsters” begins with a bold statement and contains many spectral musical effects. “Fairies & Dragons” starts with two beautiful playful themes, the first in bells and vibraphone, and the second with solo flute, oboe, and clarinets. Those themes are developed in a “Bacchanal” manner, starting with a lilting dance like fugue that becomes increasingly frenzied and fiendish!

The biggest “Monster” in the room is the metric content. The work is multi-metric of which a majority is asymmetric. Bumps In The Night features full concert band scoring with expanded percussion content which includes many accessory instruments, and small and medium size metal pails to help with the spectral setting. It is a level 5+ work for advanced high school, college, or community bands.

Since this work is or advanced ensembles, it does not include work sheets as other pieces that are written for “developing” ensembles.
