"The Trout"

The Trout is No. 2 in the collection "Moments Immortal", a collection of pieces set to texts by Amy Lowell. It is a level 3 piece for SAB Choir & Piano and would be a great fit for middle school or young high school choirs

The text is a narrative between a child and a trout as the child tries to coax the trout out of its hiding place in a nearby stream. The child's questions lead the reader to believe they are of innocent curiosity and wonderment regarding the life of the trout. Soon, however, the reader discovers the motives are not driven by curiosity, but the child's frustrated desire to catch the trout!

Like "Climbing", the musical setting evokes childlike images of curiosity and wonderment, along with childlike reactions to frustration.

Text

The Trout - Amy Lowell

Naughty little speckled trout,
Can't I coax you to come out?
Is it such great fun to play
In the water every day?
Do you pull the Naiads' hair
Hiding in the lilies there?
Do you hunt for fishes' eggs,
Or watch tadpoles grow their legs?
Do the little trouts have school
In some deep sun-glinted pool,
And in recess play at tag
Round that bed of purple flag?
I have tried so hard to catch you,
Hours and hours I've sat to watch you;
But you never will come out,
Naughty little speckled trout!
